5 Performance Marketing Metrics Every Growing Business Should Track

Clicks and impressions only tell part of the story. These five metrics show whether your paid campaigns are actually growing your business.
5 performance marketing metrics every business should track

Running ads on Google, Meta or LinkedIn is easy. Knowing whether they are actually making you money is harder. Dashboards are full of numbers, but only a handful truly show whether your campaigns are working.

Here are the five performance marketing metrics we focus on with every client — and why they matter.

1. Cost per acquisition (CPA)

CPA tells you how much you spend to win one customer or lead. It is calculated by dividing your total ad spend by the number of conversions. Tracking CPA by campaign and channel shows you where your budget works hardest — and where it is being wasted.

2. Return on ad spend (ROAS)

ROAS measures the revenue generated for every dollar spent on ads. For e-commerce businesses it is often the single most important number. A healthy target depends on your margins, so agree on a break-even ROAS before launching campaigns.

3. Conversion rate

Your conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take the action you want — a purchase, a form submission or a call. If clicks are high but conversions are low, the problem is usually the landing page, the offer or the targeting rather than the ad itself.

4. Customer lifetime value (LTV)

Not every customer is worth the same. LTV estimates the total revenue a customer brings over their relationship with you. Comparing LTV to CPA tells you how much you can afford to spend to acquire a customer while staying profitable.

5. Click-through rate (CTR)

CTR shows how compelling your ads are to the people who see them. A low CTR usually means the message or creative is not resonating with the audience. Improving CTR also tends to lower your cost per click on most platforms.

Make sure your tracking is accurate

None of these metrics matter if your data is wrong. Before scaling any campaign, make sure you have:

  • Conversion tracking set up correctly in GA4 and Google Tag Manager
  • Platform pixels and conversion APIs connected for Meta and LinkedIn
  • Clear naming conventions for campaigns and UTM parameters
  • A simple dashboard that shows the metrics above in one place

Good performance marketing is less about spending more and more about knowing exactly what each dollar returns.
